our history

Shelby Christian Church began in July of 1968 as the dream of a group of men from independent Christian churches in the surrounding area who wanted to see a similar church in the Shelbyville community. That group of men formed the Salt River Christian Men's Fellowship for the purpose of planting new churches, and SCC was the first church planted. Since that time, the SRCMF has planted churches in Henry, Anderson, Nelson, and Spencer counties, while helping to plant other churches in Jefferson, Woodford and Laurel counties.

Kenneth L. Shouse was called to be the founding minister of the church, and he faithfully served as the Senior Minister from 1968 to 1996. During those twenty-eight years, the church experienced steady growth (from 14 charter members to an average attendance of over 500), bought the property where the church is currently located, and went through four building programs. Shelby Christian Church will be forever indebted to the wonderful leadership that Brother Shouse provided to the church and the community.

After serving as an associate minister at the church for nine years, David Hamlin was called to become the Senior Minister in 1996. For the first six years of his ministry at SCC, Dave served as the  youth minister, followed by three years as Minister of Adult Discipleship and Involvement.   We also completed a fifth building program in 2005, resulting in our worship auditorium which opened in March of 2005.  God has blessed the church and it has grown to an average weekly attendance of over 1,000.

Shelby Christian Church also has a community-wide preschool program that began in 1996 and meets at the church from Monday through Friday during the school year. In addition, the completion of the Christian Life Center in 1996 brought a full range of recreational activities and sports leagues to SCC that we view as tools we can use to share the Good News about Jesus with our community.

Shelby Christian currently has a staff of eight ministers, and God has blessed us with a variety of thriving ministries, such as a fantastic youth ministry, wonderful music, world-wide mission support and a caring counseling ministry that reaches out to hurting people.

Throughout her existence--and continuing today--the purpose of Shelby Christian Church is to reach people for Jesus and equip them to become fully devoted disciples, impacting their world for Christ.
